Watch Khalid debut his single “New Normal” after Virgin Galactic spaceflight launch

On Sunday, Khalid staged an out-of-this-world premiere for his new single, “New Normal.”  It was debuted for the crew and passengers of Virgin Galactic’s Spaceship Unity during its historic launch, and then Khalid took the stage to perform it during the livestream broadcast of the event.

Khalid sang the song, which officially drops July 21, on a stage at Spaceport America in New Mexico for a small audience. You can watch it now: He performs about 1:20 into the video, after being introduced by Stephen Colbert.  In addition to “New Normal,” he sang his hits “Better” and “Talk.”

As Billboard reports, after the performance, Khalid explained how the title of the song reflects the new concept of regular people going into space on vehicles owned by billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and, in the case of Virgin, Richard Branson.

“It seems surreal. I think that’s kind of how we all feel about the times right now. But it’s true, it’s our new normal,” Khalid said. “We’re going to have to get used to it, because we’re going to see a lot more to come.”

The singer also said he hopes to one day get the “confidence” to travel to space himself.
