‘The Way It Is:’ Keyshia Cole celebrates the 16th anniversary of her debut album

R&B singer Keyshia Cole celebrates the 16th anniversary of her debut album, The Way It Is.

“Happy anniversary, The Way It Is. It’s been 16 years! Wow!” she wrote on Instagram Monday. “When you take heartbreak and use it to your advantage! Thank you to everyone who was willing to hear my cry! What an awesome era. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE SONG OF THIS ALBUM?”

In the comments, fans began listing their favorite songs from The Way It Is, which are now considered classic hits such as “I Should Have Cheated,” “(I Just Want It) To Be Over,” her platinum single, “Love,” and the Kanye West-produced track, “I Changed My Mind.”

“The entire album was my fav,” wrote one fan, while others described Cole’s debut album as “timeless.”

The Way It Is featured various themes surrounding heartbreak and love paired with resilient anthems and guest appearances from Eve, Jadakiss, and Chink Santana. It peaked at #6 on the all-genre Billboard 200 Albums chart and #2 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The influential album was certified platinum by the RIAA in 2006 and inspired the popular reality series Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, which aired from 2006-2008 on BET.
