The 2021 Grammy nominations were announced Tuesday and were not without controversy.
While The Weeknd, who was widely expected to earn several nods thanks to his album After Hours and best-selling single “Blinding Lights,” failed to make any category this year. Now, another artist has come forward with her own concerns.
“Concrete” singer Teyana Taylor noticed a glaring disparity in the Best R&B Album category and pointed it out shortly after the nominees were announced.
“Y’all was better off just saying best MALE R&B ALBUM,” Taylor fumed on Twitter, adding, “all I see is d*** in this category.”
John Legend, Luke James, Ant Clemons, Giveon and Gregory Porter are all vying for this year’s award.
When fans asked Taylor to name the female artists that deserved a shot at the Grammy, the 29-year-old singer listed, “Brandy. H.E.R. Kehlani. Summer Walker. Victoria Monet. Jhene. JoJo. Ari Lenox. SZA. Tinashe. The list goes on and on.”
The artist also clarified that she’s “not blasting the male nominees,” but the Recording Academy itself “for failing ALL the women that has been putting in work.”
“Women are clearly being overlooked here. WOMEN PLAYS A BIG PART IN CARRYING R&B,” she continued.
Taylor revisited that point when critics pointed out that women dominated the Best Rock Performance and Best Country Album categories, by quipping, “It shoulda been some WAP’s in tha R&B category.”
