Fashion designer Misa Hylton has teamed up with Macy’s for the department store’s Icons of Style, a collaboration that allows Black creatives to be the visionaries behind some of Macy’s popular brands.
Hylton, who partnered with Macy’s INC International Concepts, tells ABC Audio that having the opportunity to create exclusive designs inspired by her own unique style was honestly a dream come true.
“I always loved INC as a brand. It’s one of my favorite brands at Macy’s,” Hylton says. “And so it was a natural fit.”
When it comes to her fashion, Hylton, who has dressed some of hip-hop finest — including bestie Mary J. Blige, Lil Kim, and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs — says her “style aesthetic… stands out.”
“If you look at the clients and the people that I work with, they have the Misa touch,” she explains. “And so, I gave the Misa touch to INC. And I’m so excited about these pieces. It was such an amazing experience.”
So what can we expect from the Misa touch? Hylton says “something very feminine and beautiful… that would make women feel empowered.”
“My inspiration was my Japanese and Black heritage,” she shares. “And so I played around with a lot of Asian prints. I generally love bold colors [and] prints.”
Aside from making her original creations, Hylton says she also enjoyed working with those spearheading the project.
“To see the behind-the-scenes as well was a rewarding experience,” she says. “So mixing that creativity as well as understanding the business side and what happens behind the scenes with a huge store such as Macy’s was definitely one of the highlights of my career, for sure.”
Icons of Style, also featuring Zerina Akers, Aminah Abdul Jillil, Allen Onyia and Ouigi Theodore, is available now at macys.com and select stores nationwide.
