The 63rd Grammy Awards was filled with some certain wins and surprise wins — but no one was prepared for who was going to walk home with Song of the Year.
The category was packed with Grammy giants Beyonce, Billie Eilish, Roddy Ricch, Taylor Swift, Post Malone, H.E.R. and Dua Lipa.
“Wow, this is tense,” host Trevor Noah said before opening the envelope to reveal H.E.R.’s “I Can’t Breathe” as this year’s winner.
“Oh my god, I don’t even know what to say,” the singer noted. “I think the first thing I want to say is that I have never been so proud to be an artist. And everybody else that was nominated, those songs were to me, song of the year also and they were all amazing.”
H.E.R. went on to explain how the song came to be.
“We wrote this song over FaceTime,” the Grammy winner continued, as she explained the history of her award-winning track. “I didn’t imagine that my fear and that my pain would turn into impact. And it would possibly turn into change. And I think that is what this is about. And that’s why I write music. That’s why I do this.”
“I want to thank God for giving me the gift of a voice and a pen and using me as a vessel to create change,” she added, “But remember, we are the change that we wish to see, and that fight that we had in us, the summer of 2020, keep that same energy.”
The 23-year-old wrote her song after the death of George Floyd.
