GG Townson talks preparing for her role as Salt in Lifetime’s Salt-N-Pepa biopic

GG Townson is ready for her debut as Cheryl “Salt” James in Lifetime’s Salt-N-Pepa biopic.

Townson said no conversation was “off limits” with Salt in preparation to tell the trailblazing story of the pioneering rap group.

“We talked about the details that made the movie and we talked about details that didn’t make the movie. I think she felt it was important for me to get all of her to understand how to navigate through the scenes and know what choices to make,” she tells ABC Audio.

She said the two shared a “deep moment” on set after filming the breakup scene between Salt and the group’s “Push It” producer, Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor.

“The emotion I pulled just from my life and the things we talked about prior to getting into that mode. Even after the cameras cut she…started to get emotional,” Townson recalls. “She came into the bathroom where I was and we just sat there and cried. She was like, ‘I’m here. Get it out if you need to get it out."”

Townson treasured the “ugly details” Salt shared about her real-life experiences, which she says helped her “understand [Salt’s life] from a whole aspect.”

“Because she didn’t have to,” says Townson. “She could have said, ‘this is the script and we’re just going to talk about this. But the fact that she went above and beyond for me to understand her. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience [than] this.”

The Salt-N-Pepa biopic premieres tomorrow, January 23 at 8 p.m. ET on Lifetime, with Laila Odom as Sandra “Pepa” Denton and Monique Paul as Deidra “DJ Spinderella” Roper, who no longer performs with the group.
