After two chart-topping albums and securing six Grammy nominations in two years, DaBaby says he plans to “be retired in five years.”
In a recent cover story for XXL, the North Carolina rapper said he wants to focus on “creating other superstars” as the CEO of his imprint, Billion Dollar Baby Entertainment, which he predicts will become “one of the hottest labels in the game.” The label’s roster already includes fellow North Carolina rappers Stunna 4 Vegas, DJ K.I.D., Wisdom and Rich Dunk of DaBaby’s hometown in Charlotte, as well as female rapper KayyKilo out of Louisiana.
This could be a major move for the 29-year-old, who earned his second #1 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart for his April release, BLAME IT ON BABY, following 2019’s KIRK.
“I came in relentless with the way I put [music] out like, I’m gon’ always go with the vibe,” says DaBaby. “I feel like the way that I put [music] together leading up to the pandemic definitely put me in a position to where, right when the pandemic hit, like, I leveled up completely. I’m on a whole other wave right now. It’s just a blessing to be there during the pandemic.”
Also during the pandemic, DaBaby’s “ROCKSTAR” anthem with Roddy Ricch landed four Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year. “And to drop the song, getting all the way through there during the pandemic. That’s something can’t nobody take away from me. It can’t be done again,” he declared.
DaBaby said its a “major accomplishment” to “double up” on nominations this year, after landing two for KIRK.
“For me to double up on the amount of nominations that I got, that’s dope,” he continued. “And if “ROCKSTAR” don’t win the Grammy, then I give up on the Grammys.”
